Industry : Greggs Bakers

Greggs plc, the retail bakery chain that includes the Greggs and Bakers’ Oven brands, has installed a new CCTV system at its Gosforth head office and regional manufacturing site in Newcastle.

Supplied by Norbain SD Limited and installed by CDS Security, a leading installation company in the North East, the new system covers a complex manufacturing and office site that is bordered by the local Metro line on two sides, intersected by public roads and in close proximity to other local businesses. Further challenges faced the installer given the age of the building and the need to avoid disrupting the manufacturing process.

Ken Owens, Sales Director of CDS Security, explains:
"Securing a site which overlaps with other commercial premises and public roads has implications for privacy that must be taken into account. We couldn’t hardwire some connections without causing substantial disruption to Greggs, let alone other users of the local roads. We also couldn’t lay cabling internally without forcing the plant to close because of the health and safety implications. This also would have extended the installation period considerably. These factors heavily influenced the system design which led to a complex but very successful install that was carried out speedily by two engineers over a two week period."

With the exception of one camera that monitors a stairwell (Sony SSC-DC 298P with Computar vari-focal lens), the whole installation is external. Twenty two day night cameras (Sony SSC-DC5985 with Computar vari-focal lenses) monitor the car park, office entrances, loading bays and the complete exterior of the manufacturing plant, parts of which are considered particularly vulnerable alongside the Metro line. The cameras are mounted in Computar CHOV300 housings which hide all cabling. The three cameras monitoring the car park are mounted on Altron Towers. Four VISBOX K1.3 radio transmission units successfully transmit images from one side of the site to the other despite the very close proximity of the metro line.

Day to day monitoring is undertaken from within the company’s transport office at the front of the plant using two Vista PVD2100DG monitors. This is also the primary loading bay area for the site with high numbers of large vehicles entering and leaving frequently. A third monitor (Vista PVD1510DG) is located inside the canteen to encourage staff to self-police the car park.

Recording is onto two Dedicated Micro Digital Sprite recorders (DS2A DX16C) with a capacity of 500GB each which are located in the reception area for security reasons. Specified staff have desktop access to the recorders using DM’s Network Viewer software. A Plexwriter CDR, for recording incidents onto CD, and a DM keyboard controller (KBS3) complete the installation.

As the plant operates around the clock, recording is undertaken twenty four hours a day optimised to make full use of the Digital Sprite’s hard disk capacity without retaining images for longer than fourteen days. The busy nature of the site demands continuous recording but this does mean that some advanced DVR functionality such as motion detection isn’t required.

Eddie Cartledge, Greggs’ Chief Engineer, had previously used a Digital Sprite based CCTV system at the firm’s Edinburgh plant and this had influenced his choice of installer:

"My previous experience of Dedicated Micros’ equipment gave me considerable confidence in selecting an installer that recommended a DM based solution. It’s very easy to use which meant that our security firm could grasp it quickly. The networking software is excellent, giving me the ability to enable key staff to have direct access to the system."

Greggs employs 300 staff at the Gosforth site, the majority of which are employed in the manufacturing plant that operates 24hrs a day to service the needs of 115 shops throughout the North East.
"This is a very busy working environment," continues Eddie Cartledge. "It is to CDS Security’s considerable credit that the installation went as smoothly as it did without impacting significantly on our daily operations."
Ken Owens of CDS Security concurs:

"Compared with a CCTV installation at a pristine new site where the capacity for CCTV might be built into the very design of the building, the Greggs site presented us with considerable difficulties, although typical of thousands of well established manufacturing plants across the country that have grown and evolved over the years. We were aided immensely by our relationship with Norbain from whom we source almost all our CCTV equipment. Norbain’s Field Sales staff are always available on the end of the phone and the level of technical backup and support we receive is terrific - a major factor in our procurement decisions."
