Vista (www.vista-cctv.com), the UK’s premier brand of CCTV, is highlighting the growing importance of vehicle number plate recognition at this year’s IFSEC. On a dedicated area of its stand at IFSEC, Vista will demonstrate the Vista VNPR camera, controller and VistaBase software that comprise the total Vista VNPR solution. Capable of capturing vehicle number plate images at distances of up to 50m and speeds in excess of 100mph, Vista VNPR is designed for a wide range of applications from car park entry/exit controls to toll booth, traffic and congestion monitoring. The system is designed for continuous 24hour operation and can read number plates regardless of the strength of a vehicle’s headlights, the diversity of number plate formats or the reflectivity of the number plates themselves.
The data captured by the Vista VNPR camera head (comprising a high quality EXview™ monochrome camera, lens and Infra Red illumination) is fed back to the Vista VNPR Controller. Here, a pre-loaded database can be used to trigger events such as the raising of a car park barrier, the alerting of security staff or the levying of a charge against the vehicle owner. The database is maintained using pre-loaded VistaBase software that also provides full live and historic search capabilities by time, date, full or partial number plate filters.
Mark Pritchard, Divisional Director of Vista, says that demand for Vista VNPR is very strong and on the increase:
"The ability to cross reference captured images against a pre-loaded database and use the result of this to trigger a diverse array of events, has opened up a whole new range of potential applications for camera technology. These range from highly sensitive and security conscious applications at airports through to more benign use where, perhaps, a theatre might wish to sell car parking as part of the ticket price and control access accordingly. Congestion charging too is potentially a huge market for Vista VNPR."
The correct design and installation of vehicle number plate recognition systems is critical to their success as issues such as tailgating can swiftly undermine their effectiveness. Ian Fowler, Technical Training Manager at Norbain SD, will present a seminar at IFSEC entitled ‘Driving out misreads: The design and application of number plate recognition cameras’ as part of the IFSEC seminar programme within the Business Development Area of the show.
