Active Tampering Alarm solution from Norbain

Nov 6 2007

Reading, UK

Norbain can now offer customers the newly introduced Active Tampering Alarm from network video experts Axis. Active Tampering Alarm is an intelligent video feature built into network cameras that enables security staff to detect disrupted camera operation, by automatically alerting the operator when a camera is re-directed, obscured or manipulated.

Network cameras with the Active Tampering Alarm feature are able to alert camera operators whenever a device is re-positioned to a new area, is adjusted out of focus or when a lens becomes obscured. These incidents can occur if a camera is accidentally or intentionally re-directed, if an object is blocking the view or if a camera is attacked and vandalised.

With Active Tampering Alarm, there is an immediate notification when a camera’s normal operation is disturbed. Typically, if a camera operator is not alerted to such an incident, it can take a long time before tampering is noticed. This is especially true for centralised monitoring stations in which a single operator often monitors dozens of cameras.

Anders Laurin, executive vice president, marketing, Axis Communications, comments: "Building in Active Tampering Alarm into our network cameras is useful in applications where there is potential for vandalism – such as in schools, prisons, public transport, and in harsh environments where weather, vibrations, or dirt can disturb the camera’s performance. If it is not detected right away, significant incidents may go undetected."

"Active Tamper detection is a great example of how video analysis can be used to overcome real-world problems effectively," says Richard Price, IP product manager for Norbain. "The ease with which Axis have been able to introduce this capability into existing products without compromise is another excellent example of why they are a leading player in the world of IP video surveillance."
